Character Name: Abel Dimitri Rewanz
Series: Dan and Mab's Furry Adventures
Gender: Male
Age: 399
Species: Describing Abel's species is twofold; all beings in the land of Furrae are anthropomorphic in some way, or of some sort of unusual race. Pure humans are believed to be extinct and anybody who's claimed to see one is dubbed pretty crazy. In Abel's case, he is feline, most closely described as a cheetah.
Furthermore, Abel is an incubus. Cubi are highly emotional creatures, villified in legends for their powers of seduction and feeding off of the dreams and fantasies of their victims, but that only scratches the surfac; cubi can use their powers for good OR ill. They possess two pairs of wings; one on their back, the most indestructible part of their body, and one on their head, which grow out when they become adults and are able to hear thoughts and feed off of emotions. They are separated into many different clans, each of which have a unique symbol that appears on their members' body when they start performing a lot of magic - the only mark on their body that they can't alter, and have an affinity for a certain emotion. Abel was born into the struggling Siar clan, whose affinity is misery. Cubi don't need to eat or sleep due to their ability to harness emotions or dreams from other beings. They are sometimes known to get their power by stealing a being's soul, but that is fairly rare nowadays and certainly doesn't apply to Abel. They have a natural gift for magic, some extremely limited control over dreams, and deeper mind reading powers that are painful and dangerous to both themselves and their victim. Most famously though, cubi are shapeshifters, able to transform themselves in every possible way, from body mass to skin tone to even creating clothes or armor out of their own body. Usually they just use this ability to hide their wings in public, but some are known to pass themselves off as an entirely different person. Cubi are fewer in number now than in the past after a war with the dragon race wiped out several clans, or at least a vast majority of their numbers. But as a whole, the race is FAR from extinct.
Appearance: An anthropomorphic cheetah; he stands about average height and weight with cream-colored fur with small black spots, and a long fluffy tail. The fur on his chest, ears, upper arms, lower legs, and the underside of his tail is black, and he has short cream-colored hair with naturally brown tips and also black spots. His right eye is green and his left blue, and the wings on his back and head are feathered with black bat-like tips - both are traits extremely rare outside of the Quoar cubi clan, and it is considered good luck to be born with such. He has a red teardrop/leaf-shaped mark on his back, between the shoulderblades and wings; the Siar clan symbol. He tends to wander around shirtless with a short black skirt - yes, skirt - and black boots to match.
Personality: The first thing one discovers about Abel is that he is extremely antisocial; he tends to keep to himself and when in public he has a bad habit of being extremely sarcastic to those around him which causes most people to want to avoid him. There never really seems to be any malice behind his mind games, however. His reasons are twofold; to keep people leaving him alone, and to get a rise out of them for his own amusement.
That aside, Abel is a very smart and talented cubi. He has an air of wisdom about the world that if you're really lucky, he'll share with you, though he may do it in a snarky, blunt way. He enjoys reading and various domestic hobbies such as knitting, baking, and especially fashion and interior design; he has a very strong opinion of fashion. Being shut in at the Academy most of his life, he is very naive of most modern technology, and can be a little skittish at times.
Deep beneath the surface of his antisocial tendencies, Abel has a strong will, and if for some reason he does end up relating to someone they will be hard-pressed to find a more loyal friend more willing to suckerpunch a jerk in the face for them. Not that he's their friend, of course not. And don't try to press him on that matter either, or any matter come to think of it; he will not hesitate to lash out, which can occasionally get him in trouble. If you catch him alone, he may have an aura of someone who has something troubling them, but he won't say what.
History: Abel was born to Cid Rewanz, a retired adventurer, and his wife May. His wings and mismatched eyes caused a spread of rumors and superstitions in the town, believing that he might grow up to be some kind of monster. He was picked on by other boys his age and it was impossible to get him enrolled in school. At May's request, the family moved to the demon city Zinvth - it was an expensive and potentially dangerous choice, but not all demons are evil, and it was a place where Abel could thrive and go to school without being feared and judged for his wings. In Zinvth, Abel was even signed up for magic lessons before he was even seven years old, and lived a perfectly happy, healthy life, graduating from college and getting a steady job in a library. But then one day, everything went horribly, horribly wrong.
It started with a letter bearing the tragic news that Cindy, his old babysitter before moving to Zinvth and the only friend he had in that town, had killed herself. After attending her funeral, he walked home through the woods to take comfort in nature, when he was suddenly attacked. Devin, an old childhood bully, and his friend Xander, were traveling through looking for suspicious activity due to reports of murders in the area, and they forced Abel to come with them while they escorted him home. On the way, they encountered a wrecked fortress covered in dead bodies, likely caused by the creature they were tracking. They stayed to clean up as best they could and send out warnings to neighboring outposts, and Devin and Abel barely had time to start to reconcile before the fort was under attack again. Under the stress of the situation and watching Xander die, Abel started to panic, crying behind an overturned wheelbarrow, when suddenly wings sprouted out of the top of his head, startling Devin out of cover where he was impaled through the throat, left to choke to death as Abel sudden found himself hearing his dying thoughts until there was nothing but silence.
Abel ran home in a panic, and as May and Abel's friend Hennya frantically tried to comfort him and figure out what happened, Cid came home and saw Abel with the newly sprouted wings on his head. Being an adventurer, Cid immediately recognized them as incubus wings. He and May got into a heated argument when his first reaction was to accuse May of having an affair, but it broke down quickly when suddenly the truth came out. Cid Rewanz had been dead for twenty-five years, and the one who killed him was an incubus named Aniz, who passed himself off as Cid all this time and was, in fact, Abel's paternal father. A short struggle to defend themselves started, in which Aniz killed Hennya, abused and terrorized May, and kidnapped Abel, who could only watch May's heartbroken face as he passed out. Aniz took Abel to the Succubus and Incubus Academy, or SAIA for short, where he abandoned the boy to register him for the school with a definitive goodbye and a warning that he would kill May should Abel do anything to cross him again.
Traumatized and guilt-ridden by everything he experienced, the next several hours, possibly a day or more, were a blur to Abel. When he came around, he was in a dormitory with a woman sitting next to him reading to him. Her name was Fa'Lina, headmistress of SAIA. She explained the situation to him, offering him a choice; he could attend classes at the academy for as long as he wanted, or if he didn't like it there he could leave. But she was aware of what Aniz had said and done, and as long as she'd known him even she didn't know exactly what he had planned. So ultimately the choice was Abel's, she declared, and left him alone to think it over. After a night of crying himself to sleep and vivid dreams of Devin's ghost talking with him, he decided to stay at SAIA, just long enough to ensure his mother's safety and train himself to fight Aniz. During a tour of the academy, Abel met Destania, with whom Aniz once had very intimate history that ended bitterly and violently. She warned Abel that she too wanted to see Aniz dead for what he had done, and if Abel wasn't with her, he was against her.
Abel spent many years in the academy, making one very close friend; the excitable and talkative Mink. Then when nearly forty years had passed since his enrollment, he was suddenly called from his class to talk to Fa'Lina again. Her message was blunt; May Rewanz was old and dying, and tonight was Abel's only chance to see her before she passed away. They teleported to Zinvth, and Abel only got a few emotional minutes alone with his mother. He apologized tearfully to her, not sure she could even hear him, about everything that had happened to her that day, how he couldn't have done something to help, how he never came to see her again until now...just as much out of fear of Aniz as of her possibly blaming him and confirming all of his guilt. May awoke for only a moment before she died, long enough for Abel to hear one last thought from her mind; Abel, you are loved by me. Upon returning the academy, explaining the situation sobered even the cheerful Mink, and Abel struggled to cope as a few of the older and bitter teachers, including Destania, blamed him for his mother's death - and all the others who had died the day he was brought to the academy - and called him worthless and a coward. At least he had Mink to rely on, and to try to protect him.
A few hundred years passed at the academy. Abel initially had plans to train himself so that he could confront Aniz and kill him on his 400th birthday, the day that, according to a conversation he overheard from Fa'Lina, the ban that prevents Aniz from enrolling any more children in the academy would be lifted. However, that plan fell short when Aniz was announced dead in 1964; killed by the wife of adventurer Edward Ti'Fiona. Since then he became a loner more or less started drifting at the academy, going through a goth phase, switching out several roommates that he didn't exactly, er, click with, and insighting an incident that banned him from the academy's library. Nobody exactly knows what that incident was, but ever since then, more observant cubi have noticed a pale spotted feather quill on Mrs. Oolong's desk. Then one day, Fa'Lina informed him about a new student enrolled to SAIA who was to be his new roommate; Edward Ti'Fiona's son Daniel. Dan was very much new to the cubi community and reluctant to attend the school, but Abel nevertheless played Dan's tour guide and did his best to explain the ground rules. The tour was interrupted when Dan spent some time alone in the library to think things over, and Abel and Fa'Lina caught wind of some intruders in the academy; some of Dan's friends came running to his rescue. Abel spent some time getting to know Jyrras, who was struggling with keeping his thoughts to himself surrounded by cubi, and offered the little kangaroo rat a mental shield to protect his thoughts. After this created a misunderstanding with the rescue party and Abel got severely injured in a brawl, Fa'Lina informed him that Dan had made his decision; he was going to take his lessons at home until he decided to come to the academy full-time, and Abel was going to be his tutor. Abel refused at first, but Fa'Lina was proven to be...very convincing. He moved into Lost Lake with Dan at his sister's inn and is now doing the daily grind along with them. Sure, it's annoying being around people all the time, but it's nothing he can't handle. Unlike that nightmare he had after his first day on the job when he started taking the night shift at the inn...
Extra notes: Pardon his wingspan. Comes with the territory.
Cambot post sample: [Abel is crouched at a bookshelf on the media deck, looking through the books. He cracks one open, reads a few lines, and tosses it over his shoulder, nearly hitting Cambot as it flies toward a pile of books that have apparently gotten the same treatment.
Finally he looks over his shoulder, holding another book.]
Is this really all you guys have to read? There is not a single good book in this whole section. Frig, the only thing interesting about any of them is that nobody's taken a match to them yet to put them out of their misery.
[He sits, starting to open the next book to read; Eye of Argon.] Well, I guess it's not the worst I've ever read...when you live a few hundred years you see some--
[He stops short, eyes going wide and tail bristling as he holds the book as far away from himself as possible, disbelieving of what he's looking at. He gawks for a moment before slamming the book shut, looking up at Cambot, still bristled and wide-eyed.]
I stand corrected.
[And he throws the book toward the pile.]
Third-person log sample: If cats could sweat, Abel would have awoken cold and soaking. He lay still for several seconds, forcing himself to take several slow, deep breaths before he could slowly release the bedsheets, still under the threat of being shredded by his claws.
Sleep was something he wouldn't mind getting used to. While the accommodations weren't the greatest he'd ever had, it was a comfortable enough bed and a nice private space. But nightmares were never part of the deal. Cubi weren't even supposed to be able to dream anymore, he thought. They were always so busy playing with other beings' dreams, never needing to sleep anyway. Abel grumbled, rubbing his eyes and hoping not to see spatters of blood or his dead father's smarmy mug behind his eyelids. Being trapped in space was irritating enough without being constantly reminded of that horrible evening. He thought he was over that three hundred years ago. Or at least that's what he kept telling people.
Then a heavy thumping of bass-driven accordion in the wall caused him to cringe, pressing his paws over his ears. Was that gold robot really listening to Best of Polka again?! Abel gurgled out an exasperated groan and shoved the covers over his head, faceplanting into the pillow. That's it; tomorrow he was getting a refund on...whatever got him stuck in this place.

Abel: *as Char* I want Hansel and Gretel cross-examined!
“I’m going to go out and catch one of those things,” said Terl.
“Not with any of my crews and equipment you ain’t,” said Char.
Terl heaved his mammoth bulk off the seat and crossed the creaking floor to the berthing hatch.
“You’re as crazy as a nebula of crap,” said Char.
Abel: *as Terl* Oh yeah, well you're as stupid as a galaxy of snowcones! Or a black hole of ducks! Or a quark of butterscotch! WE'RE IN SPACE!
